Oct. 15, 2012 - PRLog -- Although it shouldn't be a shock to see energy prices rising (they have risen by 87% in the last 7 years) it’s always a surprise to see them go up just before the cold nights descend upon us.

Mark Todd of the Energyhelpline explains,
"With two significant price rises, from two major suppliers in one day, today is black Friday for consumers. An average rise of 8.9 per cent for npower customers, and six per cent for British Gas customers will be a bitter pill to swallow for households facing a harsh winter of higher food prices and now, soaring energy costs.

The increase for a typical npower customer will be £103 a year, a £61 increase on gas and £42 increase on electricity. With UK fuel bills looking to reach unprecedented heights, we are calling on the government to heed advice from the industry to increase competition and ease the burden of rising household costs.

It is important to fix your tariff now, as the best fixed deals are starting to creep up in cost as more energy companies announce their price rises for the winter. In the ongoing recession, it is more important than ever for consumers to do everything they can to avoid spiraling household bills in the coming winter months."

So What Options Do You Have?
If you are not on a fixed price tariff at the moment then switching to one now is a no brainer.

first:utility and NPower both have Fixed Term tariffs which will hold your prices for the next couple of winters.

first:utility has iSave Fixed v4, which let’s you fix your prices until March 2014 and by switching to them you are not only avoiding the latest (2012) price increase but any forthcoming price rises for 2013 (remember, it’s rare that energy prices ever come down) and the beginning of 2014.

Those currently with NPower don’t even have to switch to another supplier in order to avoid the coming price increases. NPower has a tariff, Energy Online Jan 14, which also allows you to fix your prices until January 2014, again holding your prices through this and the next winter.

Stay One Step Ahead
Whichever suppliers you are with, smart people are switching as soon as possible.  It’s up to you, the householder, to stay one step ahead of the energy companies by seeking out their cheapest options.
