Big Data And Security Intelligence: Insatiable Appetite, Unmet Need

Silver Tail Systems in conjunction with research firm Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) today announced the initial findings of recent research that details various approaches to leveraging Big Data for Security Intelligence. The research, which will be highlighted in an upcoming ESG report entitled The Intersection of Big Data and Security Analytics demonstrates that IT teams at many organizations are looking to utilize big data as a new approach to capturing and understanding network data and that offers customers a disruptive technique to detecting attacks and protecting their online platforms.

The research, which surveyed more than 250 IT security professionals at enterprises throughout North America, cites current lack of resources and available solutions as challenges around the use of big data for security intelligence. Key findings include:

•   Monitoring User Behavior Cited As Biggest Weakness – 76% of respondents collect logs tracking user activity yet monitoring user behavior for security incident detection remains the top concern impacting organizational security.
•   Lack of Commercially Available Tools – 77% would use home grown or open source tools for Big Data Security due to few commercially available options.
•   Staffing and Skillset A Key Limitation To Adoption - Analyzing and visualizing data and lack of personnel are highlighted as key challenges to leveraging Big Data for security purposes.
