Sept. 28, 2012 - PRLog -- In the remaining two weeks for CAT 2012, fixing up the strategy for test taking is very important. This article shares the strategy for the verbal ability & logical reasoning section.

The verbal ability area will consist of reading comprehension passages and questions pertaining to them and questions on English usage. There are 20 questions in the area and 10 questions in the logical reasoning area. The following points will help you fix the strategy for this section.

Choose the area to start with: By the time you will start this section, you would have already completed the first section and have a fair idea on your performance there. Start with the area which you are more comfortable with. If you decide this earlier, you won’t have to spend time in deciding where to start with.

Go through the paper & mark questions you want to answer: For better time management, you can mark the questions you would like to attempt while skimming through the paper. You might have to change the question selection during the process of answering; so select sufficient questions.

Attempt English usage questions first: You should attempt application-based questions first, such as those on English usage, fill in the blanks, para jumbles, grammar, etc. These questions are less time consuming and chances are there that you can have more accuracy here. Mohith S, CAT 2011 topper and an IIM Rohtak student, says, “Attempt the English usage questions first and the reading comprehension questions later as you have to read and understand the passage and then only you can answer questions.” Even if you begin with the logical reasoning area, attempt easier puzzles first for the sake of better time management.

Read the passage first: In the reading comprehension part, you are advised to read the passage first before browsing through the questions. “The questions of CAT reading comprehension is not very direct, hence they would not make much sense to you unless you read the passage first. So read the passage and then the questions. Go back to the passage to find out the answers,” says Shaunak Acharya, 99.97 percentiler in CAT 2011 and a student of FMS Delhi.

Focus on accuracy: Accuracy is important as ever. Concentrate on English usage and LR questions which are more scoring in nature compared to reading comprehension questions. So attempt as much application-based questions as possible and answer them with 100 per cent accuracy to score high.
