Sept. 25, 2012 - PRLog -- Dermatology Laser Center of San Diego enhances the treatment of skin cancer with new, modern state of the art eBx radiation treatment in its office.

Dermatology Laser Center of San Diego has partnered with The Pioneer in the Integration of Dermatology and Radiation Therapy, Advanced Rad Solutions to bring the first ever in-office treatment of skin cancer with electronic brachytherapy to San Diego County.

Dermatology Laser Center of San Diego is pleased to announce that has brought new, modern state of the art eBx radiation therapy to its offices.  This new form of radiation therapy allows patients to be comfortably treated in their dermatologist’s office, providing them a new, non-invasive treatment option for common forms of skin cancer, basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma.  According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States with approximately 2.8 million cases of basal cell diagnosed each year along with another 700,000 cases of squamous cell being diagnosed annually.

“Our goal in adding eBx radiation therapy to the Dermatology Laser Center was to provide our patients a non-invasive, non-surgical option for the treatment of basal cell and squamous cell cancer.  eBx is an outstanding treatment option for those patients who have had multiple skin cancer surgeries or whose cancer is located in challenging anatomical locations such as eyelids, nose, ears and lips.  Further, eBx can be used to treat skin cancer on many other parts of the body and our patients love it”, said Dr. Cole Willoughby, board certified dermatologist with the Dermatology Laser Center.  “While radiation therapy has been used for treating skin cancer for many years, it had to be done at a radiation oncology center or in a heavily shielded room with numerous treatments, between 15 to 30 sessions depending on the cancer.  With eBx our patients receive their treatment in our office with as few as 8 treatment sessions, they appreciate the convenience and prefer having the treatment administered in the familiar environment of our offices with staff they know” said Dr. Mark Willoughby, board certified dermatologist with the Dermatology Laser Center.

eBx radiation therapy was brought to the San Diego metropolitan area by Advanced Rad Solutions.

eBx is an alternative to radioactive isotope-based brachytherapy. It utilizes a miniaturized X-ray source to deliver precisely localized, high dose radiation to the target area, at low energy.  Treatment can be performed without the need for a shielded room, allowing the doctor and other medical personnel to be present during treatment delivery which can minimize patient anxiety.   Drs. Amy Han and Erick Mafong, dermatologists with the Dermatology Laser Center of San Diego stated:  “We now offer our skin cancer patients an effective option of treating their cancer without surgery thanks to the addition of eBx radiation therapy to our practice.  Patients are excited to learn of this new treatment option.”
