ADHD, Natural Cure - Consider Unplugging

For some children who watch excessive television, especially cartoons with action or violence, ADHD symptoms can result. Consider unplugging for better mental health for children. Five million Americans have already unplugged.

Sept. 6, 2012 - PRLog -- Clinical studies indicate that for children who watch excessive amounts of television from an early age,  symptoms of ADHD may result or be accentuated. Additionally, there is evidence that action cartoons, or cartoons with violence, including the beloved Sponge Bob, can "wind up the spring" of children, resulting in symptoms usually associated with ADHD, such as inattention, inability to focus, and difficulty sitting still.

Interestingly, this seems to be the case even when children watch such cartoons for as little as 20 minutes. What we might discern intuitively, proves to be the case when examined "under the microscope," as it were.

All forms of the media do affect the minds of children and teens. One study from the Bronx (New York), indicates that children and teens who watch violent movies  or play violent video games get lower grades in school. One study indicates that teens who listen to even a couple of hours of music daily on their iPods or similar devices, are more prone towards depression, with a higher incidence of Major Depression.

Parents can be aware of these factors, and make needed adjustments. Sociologist Marina Komar, in her book, Living Without the Screen: Causes and Consequences of Life Without Television, describes the television like the persistent buzz of a gnat in her home, and has done without it for the past approximately 17 years. She documents the lives of those who live without television for one reason or the other, and comments that most children and teens, while not quite as in tune with pop-culture, don't seem to mind "unplugging" once they get used to it.  Parents who have difficulty keeping the TV in check for their young children might consider "unplugging".

The clinical studies referred to here, and others, are documented in the book, Overcoming ADHD Without Medication: A Guidebook for Parents and Teachers. It is available in major bookstores, as well as available online in paperback and ebook from most major online sellers. It recommends encouraging your children to take up art, as one simple solution, which can help children who have symptoms of ADHD to learn to focus over sustained periods of time. Many other practical ideas are highlighted.

The book was developed by educators in the public school system and contains a wealth of  ideas and resources towards a "natural cure" for ADHD. Please visit the NorthEast Books and Publishing website for more information. Thank you.
