Around 4 Million Bumbo Baby Seats Recalled After Multiple Reports of Baby Skull Fractures

After receiving numerous reports of babies falling from Bumbo Baby Seats, including almost 20 reported skull fractures, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has ordered a recall of around four million of them because of a falling hazard.

Aug. 16, 2012 - PRLog -- The seat fails to safely restrict the baby, allowing him or her to wiggle free and out of the seat.

The baby seats, manufactured by the South African based company Bumbo International Trust, were sold across the nation at Walmart, Toys R Us, Target, USA Babies, Sears, Babies R Us, and many other children’s toy stores and online retailers between August 2003 and August 2012 in a price range between $30-$50.

A previous voluntary recall in October 2007 of around 1 million Bumbo seats warned consumers of using the product on raised surfaces. Since then, there have been at least 50 cases of babies falling from the seats when it was placed on a raised surface, nineteen of which involved the baby suffering skull fractures from the fall.

The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention estimates that falls are the leading cause of traumatic brain injury (35.2 percent) in the Unites States. Further, for children between the ages of 0 and 14, 61 percent of traumatic brain injury cases are caused by falls. Around 18 percent of all traumatic brain injury-connected emergency hospital visits involve children between the ages of 0 and 4.

Long time product liability lawyer and father of two kids, James Parrish, handles defective product personal injury cases in Virginia. “I can’t imagine what those parents go through when they’re forced to watch their child face so much pain at an early age,” he stated. “That’s why I do what I do, to try and make their lives, and the child’s life, a little bit easier.”

Consumers who own Bumbo Baby Seats should cease using the product immediately and order a free repair kit by going online at www.recall.BumboUSA.com or calling (866) 898-4999. Consumers should not return the kits to the place of purchase, as retailers cannot provide the repair kit. Repair kits include instructions for installation, safe use instructions, redesigned warning labels, and a restraint belt.
