By: Privcap Few people have been active in emerging markets private equity as long as Jonathon Bond, a Partner and Head of Fundraising at London-based Actis. In a wide-ranging interview with Privcap, Bond details the reasons behind Actis’ deal with the UK government to buy back 40 percent of the firm that the partners did not already own. Bond also discusses why he believes emerging markets private equity is “very much at an inflection point.” He cautions that the increasing popularity of emerging markets among limited partners may be “fueling a future problem” caused by the “unrealistic weight of expectations” Finally Bond describes two cases in which Actis bought “trusted, local” brands in specific markets and grew them by expanding to other emerging markets, such as a South African stolen-car recovery system that has been expanded to Brazil. Bond is based in the London office of the firm and is a Member of Investment Committee for India. He also has overall responsibility and oversight of the ESG function and activities and is a Member of the Supervisory Board. Bond is a Member of the Fund Raising and Investor Relations team. He is responsible for and leads the firm’s global fund-raising and investor relations activities through the Investor Development Group. Bond joined CDC Capital Partners in 2001 as a Managing Director of fundraising and investor development activities, prior to the creation of Actis Capital LLP in 2004, with the responsibility for setting up and managing a fund-raising team. He also led negotiations with the British Government on the re-structuring of CDC Group plc that led to the creation of Actis Capital LLP in 2004. From 1994 to 2001, Bond was a Director at HSBC Private Equity, Asia. He was responsible for founding and developing the company's operations in India, and managing the $60 million HSBC Private Equity India Fund. Prior to that, Bond held positions with Electra Private Equity in London and Paris from 1988 to 1993 and with Bain & Company in London from 1985 to 1986. He serves as a Director of Mobile Telecommunications Company KSC, since July 2005. In addition, Bond is a Member of the Management Committee, Valuations Steering Group, and Investment Committees for Africa, Asia Pacific, Energy, and Malaysia, South Asia, CDC Globeleq, and Infrastructure. He served as a Board Director of Celtel from 2002 to 2005. Bond holds an M.A. and a B.A. (Honors) degree in Law from Oxford University. End
