Aug. 8, 2012 - PRLog -- Visitors to the San Diego area often want to find Authentic Mexican food and aren’t sure where to look. The best place to look is usually directories such as Yelp, Urbanspoon, Tripadvisor, etc. There you will find the popular Mexican restaurant, El Indo.

Founded in August, 1940 by Ralph Pesqueira Sr., this restaurant has established a solid reputation for providing the best authentic Mexican food in the San Diego area. It started out as a tortilla factory that handmade fresh corn tortilla. Eventually workers from the Convair plant started asking Ralph Sr. to make lunch items. He obliged by creating the first Taquitos, (meaning little taco) for his customers.

Between 1945 and 1946 Ralph Sr. invented the first tortilla machine in his basement. He was then able to increase production from 30 dozen tortillas a day to 30 dozen per hour and begin supplying other local Mexican restaurants. In 1947 he moved the whole operation to its current location in the Mission Hills area of San Diego.

Ralph Jr. began working behind the counter and many long term customers still call him “Sonny” to this day. Ralph Jr. took over the business in 1981 after the passing of Ralph Sr. and following tradition he is grooming his daughters to take over the business from him. It is truly a 3rd generation business that has continued to maintain the same quality that Ralph Sr. began with many years ago.

What sets El Indio apart from the rest is that they serve the same quality Sonora style dishes they started with while continuing to improve where needed. They still make their own fresh tortillas right on site with a newer and improved tortilla making machine. Customers often stop to watch as the fresh tortilla role off the assembly line.

El Indio is known the world over because they have provided care packages to soldiers serving in Vietnam, Iraq and now Afghanistan. Soldiers around the world always look forward to receiving the care packages with authentic Mexican food. Even a couple of presidents have sampled the food provided to soldiers in the field. The Honorable Pete Wilson, once a San Diego Mayer enjoyed visiting El Indio and asked them to cater his first inauguration as Governor of California.

When you have that kind of reputation you do everything you can to protect it and to carry on with the same quality that Ralph Sr. established back in 1940.

As the business has grown they find that their catering business has become a major part of their business. From hosting parties on their patio to catering events at other locations, El Indio is often called upon because of their Authentic Mexican Food and their ability to serve the needs of their customers.
