Aug. 1, 2012 - PRLog -- Grand Rapids, Michigan, August 1, 2012 – Deborah Robles has been named as the 2012 Hospice of Michigan - Grand Valley State University Second Degree Nursing Scholarship recipient.

The Second Degree Nursing Scholarship, or SDNS, is a unique opportunity that guarantees the selected nursing student a full-time job as a registered nurse for Hospice of Michigan following graduation. With funding provided by HOM, the SDNS scholarship, awards the selected student full tuition, a stipend and a preceptorship with HOM that provides first-hand experience in hospice care and nursing residency. After the student graduates and passes the licensure exam, she will fulfill a two-year agreement to work as a full-time nurse for HOM.

Robles will complete her nursing degree in August 2013 from the GVSU Kirkhof College of Nursing.  She currently holds a bachelor's degree magna cum laude in mathematics from Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio.

She is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honors Society and the GVSU Student Nurses Association.  Robles has also volunteered her time with several local schools and churches, including Forest Hills Public Schools, Sts. Peter and Paul Church and St. Thomas the Apostle Church.  In addition, she has taught math at Catholic Central High School, Grand Valley State University and St. Francis Xavier School.

A native of Grand Rapids, Robles now resides in Cascade with her husband and their five children.

Jordan McAskin was the first student to receive the SDNS scholarship, in 2009, and has just completed her first year with HOM.  She has transferred to HOM’s Ann Arbor office for her second year.

The scholarship is offered specifically to GVSU Kirkhof College of Nursing students who are enrolled in the college’s accelerated second-degree program. Students in that program already have a bachelor’s degree or higher in a field other than nursing.
