During the interview he shares his unique approach to intervening in a loved one’s addiction, as well as some information about a new kind of addiction- Internet and device obsession.
The average person often thinks of an intervention as a forced event, where the addict is almost cornered into submission; however, this is not Brad Lamm's approach. He believes an intervention should start with an invitation to the addict. The addict may or may not be receptive, but the intervention is meant to begin the process of recovery. The intervention itself needs to be executed with hope and love, because when fear and anger are present little progress is made. In addition to his experience as an Intervention Specialist, assisting friends and family in intervening in many types of addiction, Brad Lamm personally struggled with addiction. For 20 years, he struggled with addictions to both alcohol and drugs. It was not until his friends intervened that his road to recovery began. Despite this intervention, it still took six month for him to go to rehabilitation, but he credits his friends with beginning the process. His personal experience is the very reason he has a unique approach to the intervention process. During his appearance on WPIX, a new kind of addiction called Internet and device obsession is discussed. This type of addiction stems from the fear that something will be missed if the addict's device is not readily available. He uses the discussion of Internet and device addiction as a platform to educate viewers about when to know whether an addiction has grown to the point that it must be addressed. In the interview, he also answers many of the questions that may linger for those considering an intervention. He explains how many times friends and family wonder if they can change the addict, but what they do not realize is the addict is also struggling with whether they can make a lasting change. He also shares his expertise on how not to enter an intervention without help from others, who to gather for an intervention, and how to deal with discouragement when the addict is not receptive to change at first. With his knowledge and personal experience Brad Lamm provides viewers with a fresh perspective on intervening in an addiction, and he answers many questions that may be weighing on the addict or their friends and family.
