Follow on Google News | The Smoking Popes & Mr. Blotto Headline 2012 Terrapin 5K & Music FestivalChicagoland's original race party has evolved this year into a full-fledged Music Festival.
By: RAM Racing For 2012 RAM has taken the next step securing The Smoking Popes, The Kickback, Elephant Gun, Truman & His Trophy and Board of Governors for live music before, during and after the race across two stages. The location is Stadium Green in Soldier Field’s SE corner, aptly renamed "Terrapin Station" for the night, on August 2nd, 2012 "Registration is on track to surpass last year’s 3,500 and we're thrilled to give Chicagoans a race and concert experience they'll never forget," said RAM's Race Director Brandon Presern. "This was well worth every minute of training I did. First race since '92! If Blotto is there next year, sign me up for sure!" Chris R wrote on Facebook after last year's event. Mr. Blotto is a Chicago jam band formed in 1991; they have headlined every T5K. The Blotto discography includes five albums with a sixth CD scheduled for release at Blottopia 2012. The Smoking Popes first burst onto the scene in 1991 and released several albums on various local labels before signing to Capitol Records in 1995. The Kickback started with two brothers emigrating to Chicago from South Dakota in late 2009; their EPs received acclaim from Rolling Stone, the Chicago Sun Times and numerous music blogs. Starting with their first release "K.P." in 2008, Chicago based Elephant Gun has put out 3 more recordings, including "Kid Scissors" in 2011. Since releasing an "Early Demos" recording in '07 Truman & His Trophy now has 7 works in their discography, including 2011's "Bottom George Pizza Planet". "It's encouraging to see a Chicago business reach out and partner with the local music scene to share it with an audience of 1,000’s; we're honored to be a part of the event," said Truman member Frank Porcaro. For the final T5K act RAM did things a little differently. They launched the first ever Terrapin Idol contest to find Chicago's hottest up-and-coming act. #Rammies, or RAM fans, came out in droves and voted Board of Governors, a power-rock trio, the winner! "The support we received over the last few weeks to help us win this contest has been amazing!! Our friends, family and fans from all over the country really came through and spread the word about voting, and because it was such a close finish, every vote really did count! Props to Chester Brown for keeping this contest such a close call all the way to the end," commented BOG singer/guitarist Trevor Hougardy. Hougardy is particularly stoked given he himself is an endurance athlete, who recently set a Personal Record at Leon's World Fastest Triathlon in Hammond, IN with a time of 2 hours, 19 minutes and 20 seconds, 8th in his age group, competing in the Olympic Distance Triathlon. "I personally am very excited about this race and concert because it combines the two main aspects of my life, music and athletics. Working as a triathlon coach with Trimonster and [TEAM TO END AIDS] allows me to be surrounded by great people that don't always have the time to train and also stay up late to see live music ... but in an environment where they can get a workout, and THEN grab a brew or two and relax and watch some good music ... [it's] the best of both worlds!!" Speaking on behalf of the race’s official charity partner, Keri Schindler said "As a group dedicated to helping amputees interested in running we here at The Chicago Blade Runners are ecstatic to be working with the Terrapin 5K. It's a race designed for competitive athletes and recreational runners, just like our organization." Following their beautiful run next to Chicago’s lakefront, runners will be treated to food and Magic Hat beer. Time Out Chicago blogger Liz Plosser summed it up in her T5K race report "Exercise, endorphins and beer? Last night the Terrapin 5K had to be the city's happiest happy hour." About RAM Racing RAM Racing was co-founded 10 years ago by Steve Ginsburg and Paul Rosenblum as a result of their passion for endurance sports.
