Follow on Google News | The Orkney Furniture Maker and the Orkney ChairKevin left school at the age of 16 to launch his much desired career with an apprenticeship with a well known local furniture maker with the reputation of high quality craftsmanship.
Arcaibh or Orkney is famous for many things. It's wildlife, it's history, it's scenery and of course the Orkney Chair. The history of the chair goes back a long way and although over the years the design may have altered slightly the chair is still very distinctive. The legs of the original chairs where much shorter than a normal chair (the legs where usually made of driftwood), this was to avoid as much of the smoke from the peat burning fire in the croft. The high weaved curved back protected the owner from the worst of the draughts that would whistle through the croft and was made from local straw as it still is today. The chair pictured here was crafted by The Orkney Furniture Maker.
