Athens Ford Says Game On! Ford Attacks the Midsize Class with EcoBoost, Hybrid and Plug-in Fusions!

June 19, 2012 - PRLog -- For a few years now, the Ford Fusion has been one of America's most popular midsize sedans. Ford will be hoping to keep that trend going for 2013, as the redesigned 2013 Ford Fusion will have dramatic new styling as well as an expanded lineup that will include three different gas engines, a gas-electric hybrid and a plug-in hybrid.

The basic engine for the Fusion will be the 2.5-liter four-cylinder that carries over from the current model and makes 170 horsepower. From here, shoppers can choose between a pair of turbocharged four-cylinder engines. The economical option will be a 1.6-liter "EcoBoost" engine that will generate 179 hp and promise to deliver fuel economy estimates of 26 mpg city/37 mpg highway.

Replacing a V6 performance option for the Fusion will be a 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder that will produce 237 hp and 250 pound-feet of torque. The latter will be paired with a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system for enhanced handling capabilities.

Ford will also offer two Fusion hybrid models. The Fusion Hybrid pairs the 2.0-liter four-cylinder with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack, and Ford expects the hybrid to return 47 mpg in the city and 44 on the highway -- better than the Toyota Camry. The Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid, meanwhile, will also use the 2.0-liter four and electric motor for 185 combined hp and more than 100 MPGe (an efficiency standard reserved for electric vehicles and hybrids). Ford says that's better than the Chevrolet Volt's 92 MPGe or the 87 MPGe expected from the new Prius plug-in hybrid.

Underneath, the Fusion is based on a new platform that Ford says is stiffer and safer than before. Electric-assist power steering comes standard on all models as part of the car's focus on improved efficiency. A bold grille, more curvaceous sheet metal and a longer, slightly wider body give the new Fusion a sportier look than its predecessor.
Technology will again be at the forefront. The 2013 Ford Fusion will offer advanced safety features typically absent in this segment, including adaptive cruise control, parking assist, blind-spot detection and lane-keeping assist, which beeps and sends feedback through the steering wheel to wandering drivers. Ford Sync and the next generation of MyFord Touch will also be offered.

The 2013 Fusion and Fusion Hybrid models go on sale this fall, while the Fusion Energi should be at dealers by the end of the year. Given that the current Fusion is still one of our favorite family sedans, the new model looks as if it will continue to be a prime choice alongside other revitalized top contenders such as the Chevrolet Malibu, Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata.
