June 16, 2012 - PRLog -- ‘Beyond the Boundaries’ truly speaks of diminishing boundaries and horizons in the life of a people uprooted from their native homeland. It is a story of the Sylhetis of erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). They left their ancestral homes and had to uproot themselves during the Partition in 1947 and they settled in the North East of India. Living and adjusting in an alien land, learning new ways and fighting for survival were things that changed their lives forever.

Geographical boundaries notwithstanding, the ideological changes in the old and the new generations make for interesting reading. A generation of these Sylhetis tried to live with their ideals and dreams and a new generation developed separate dreams and aspirations which clashed with these old ones. They did not hesitate to look to the West for inspiration and therein lies the essence of the novel which talks of lost and found dreams and ideals, of pain and happiness, of love and hatred.

The author’s writings reflect his everyday meanderings of his middle class existence. The sights and sounds that surround him, the language that he writes in and that is reflected in his book is the language of his life around him. It is so truly a reflection of the mediocrity and the pain and the joys and hopes of people whom he sees every day. From teaching in remote village schools to working in a pharmaceutical firm, the author has had an experience of a lifetime. His varied experiences and his power of observation stood him in good stead and the result is there for everyone to see in his debut novel. He has also to his credit a book based on the history of scientific discoveries in the Bengali language. He has also published innumerable articles on diverse subjects like cinema, literature, economics, sociology & science.
These emotions take shape in the form of the protagonists who are involved in the novel. Man creates physical boundaries around them but no boundary can restrict him in its narrow defined frame. These boundaries can be physical and yet they could be ideological. To live outside these ideological boundaries and to try to come to an understanding between these lines, is what the novel is all about.
