POWER Push For Airport Jobs Intensifies This Week
June 15, 2012 - PRLog -- More members of Philadelphia City Council are expected at two economic justice forums, this week, hosted by POWER! (www.powerphiladelphia.org). The community forums, attended by hundreds of people, are aimed at securing jobs for unemployed Philadelphians from the upcoming airport expansion project. The meeting on Monday June 18th will be held at 6:45pm at St. Raymond's Catholic Church, located at 1350 East Vernon Road in Philadelphia. The second meeting will take place on Wednesday, June 20th, at 6:45pm, at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church located at 6001 Colgate Street also in Philadelphia. So far, four Philadelphia City Councilpersons have heeded POWER!’s call to co-sponsor legislation to give preference to Philadelphia residents on jobs and economic opportunities created by the Airport expansion and other publicly-subsidized projects. With the support of Councilpersons Mark Squilla, Kenyatta Johnson, Bill Green, and Curtis Jones, POWER! is hoping to maintain momentum as it seeks support from the rest of Council. The following members of Philadelphia City Council are expected at next week’s economic justice forums:

•   Councilman At-Large Jim Kenny
•   Councilman at-Large Dennis O’Brien
•   8th District Councilwoman Cindy Bass
•   9th District Councilwoman Marian Tasco
•   7th District Councilwoman Maria Quinones-Sanchez
•   10th District Councilman Brian O’Neill
•   6th District Councilman Bobby Henon
•   5th District Councilman Darrell Clarke

The $6 billion Airport Expansion project, which will be financed in part by municipal bonds, state and federal funds, and airport fees, is projected to bring more than 100,000 jobs to the Philadelphia region over the next several decades.  The Airport continues to be among the city’s largest economic engines.

POWER! is comprised of more than 40, inter-faith congregations in the city of Philadelphia that have joined forces to bring about change and economic justice.
