June 8, 2012 - PRLog -- WHAT:   Stella Waltz, co-owner of JES, a Hampton Roads-based regional foundation repair and waterproofing company, speaks to schools and civic organizations about the history, proper care and respectful etiquette of the American flag. On Tuesday, June 12, Stella will be presenting to the students of John B. Dey Elementary School in Virginia Beach, VA. The media is invited.

During the month of May and June, JES has been accepting worn, tattered and faded flags for proper retirement in honor of Flag Day on June 14th.  The flags will be properly retired by a Virginia Beach-based Boy Scout Troop during a flag retirement ceremony.  As part of this program, Ms Waltz speaks to schools and civic organizations about the history, proper care and respectful etiquette of the American flag – a subject near and dear especially to the military community of Hampton Roads.

WHY:   Stella Waltz’s passion for the American flag is rooted in the inspiration of her father, Retired Chief Petty Officer Felix Maurizio, 85, who fought at the Normandy Invasion, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and other major battles of World War II. “Phil”, as he is known, often accompanies Stella at her presentations. Stella observes “In today’s society, many people overlook the importance of what the flag symbolizes. I especially enjoy teaching young people about the history and respect.”

Chapter 10, Section 176 of the United States Code: “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably burning.”

According to Bob Walter, Scoutmaster in Virginia Beach, the most important and common aspect of all these ceremonies is “respect” for the flags being retired.  Walter also states, “It is important to explain to younger children that a flag being burned by a demonstrator is different than one being retired with honor and dignity.”

WHEN:   Stella Waltz speaks on Tuesday, June 12, at 1:30 p.m.
American flags will be collected from May 9, 2011 through June 30, 2011 in honor of Flag Day on June 14th from 8 AM – 5 PM Monday thru Friday at JES, 569 Central Drive, Virginia Beach, VA
