The Giving Of Flowers Can Say And Do It All

June 3, 2012 - PRLog -- Flowers say it all and many flowers have meanings attached to the colour, none more than the rose.  Roses are given as gifts to loved ones on special occasions, and the meaning of the colour sends the heartfelt message.

The giving of red roses is for love, it says ‘I love you’, a pink rose is an expression of admiration also appreciation, yellow is for joy and friendship, also evokes a feeling of warmth and happiness, the white rose is for innocence and purity and is associated with marriages and new beginnings, also a symbol of honour and reverence, and the orange rose symbolizes passion and excitement.

Flowers are not the only gift given in appreciation, plants, shrubs and trees are very often given so they can be planted and is a reminder of some milestone in one’s life.  Flowers and plants have a particular language of their own, and during the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901, flowers conveyed specific messages, for example the geranium could mean true friendship, stupidity or folly, the ivy geranium requested ‘your hand for the next dance’, the lemon geranium denoted an ‘unexpected meeting’ the rose geranium expressed a ‘preference’ and the scarlet colour stood for consolation.

Geraniums mean a mixed bag of colours, sizes, shapes and uses, and often used in cooking and medicinal terms, it gives flavour to baked goodies, and makes calming teas.  Medicinally they treat skin conditions, headaches, arthritis and stomach problems, and create aromatherapy products.

Many plants have folklore attached to them and it is this folklore that suggests the presence of the white geranium meant that snakes stayed away, and placed near an open window meant the flies kept away.

The begonia plant in years gone by was used in making medicine and was used to disinfect wounds, stop swelling and ease the symptoms of a cold and upset stomach, and the flowers were used to ease burns, and also used as food in salads.  The begonia is a great source of vitamin C, and of course perfect when citrus fruits were not available.

Through history like many other plants lavender also has a connection to witch-craft and sorcery, and has been believed to counteract the evil eye.  Tea brewed from lavender flowers was often prescribed as a treatment for headaches from fatigue or weakness, and a few drops of lavender oil on the temples is said to cure nervous headaches.

Researchers are finding many of the medicinal attributes that have been paired with lavender throughout the centuries are valid, the lavender oil has indeed been scientifically found to be a powerful antiseptic, and most of the earlier medical uses of lavender appear to be founded on fact.
