IIM Kashipur: We aim to take IIM Kashipur in Top 10 B-schools in next 10 years: Dr G Sinha

June 1, 2012 - PRLog -- Dr. Gautam Sinha is the first director of IIM Kashipur which had been running without a director since its inception last year.

Dr. Sinha carries over three decades of rich experience in industry and academia including 25 years in the steel and engineering industry. Prior to taking over as the IIM Director, Dr. Sinha was the Director of LB Shastri Institute of Management (LBSIM), New Delhi. Dr Sinha has also taught at IIT Kharagpur’s Vinod Gupta School of Management for about 9 years.

In an interview with MBAUniverse.com, Dr Sinha shares the roadmap he is drawing to build the institution which is currently being mentored by IIM Lucknow. He says that though building an institution from scratch is a challenging task, but his long experience in industry and Top management institutions will help him take IIM Kashipur in the league of Top 10 B-schools in the country in next 10 years.

Excerpts:

Q: Congratulations for your new role as Director of IIM Kashipur. What is the state of affairs at the institute?

A: Thank you. IIM Kashipur is just a year old institution and first batch of students were admitted last year only. But still I would say that the campus looks good and the infrastructure support is better than some of the other new IIMs.  We have fairly good buildings which are spacious and suffice the current need at the institution. We also have a good hostel that fairly suit our requirements. We have very good class rooms as well.

Q: You have long academic experience with Top institutions. What could be the USP of IIM Kashipur in long run?

A: This is something that has to be well thought. We have just started, so we are in the process of thinking. We are in the process of envisioning which is a joint process that will include all the stakeholders including students, Faculty members, Board of Governors and also the inputs from corporate.

We have captured students’ point of view. Now, we are trying to capture the faculty point of view. Once we gather inputs from everywhere we will deliberate on these things and will come up with a vision statement soon.  

Q:  How is the academic and technical infrastructure at the institute?

A: On both the front, we have initiated action. While we are already in the process of recruiting faculty members, the IT infrastructure in the campus will be set up soon.  This will include everything of a modern IT infrastructure for an institute including video conferencing rooms, computer labs and other facilities. We will also connect with all other IIMs through video linking.

Q: Is this the permanent campus of IIM Kashipur?

A: No. This is not the permanent campus. We are going to have a big campus of our own on 200 acres in a nearby area called Kundeshawi. The land has already been allotted to us and we are demarcating the land now. We are going to build a modern campus with all the state of art infrastructural and technical facilities in 3-4 years from now.  

Q: How many seats are you offering at IIM Kashipur this year?

A: We have 40 seats this year which is the same number that the institute offered last year.
Q: What is your message to the students who may not get admission into Top IIMs and may like to join the new IIMs like IIM Kashipur?

A: My message to aspirants is that they should come, join and enjoy the transformational experience here. I would rather say, let’s build the brand IIM Kashipur together.

Q: Finally, what is your vision for IIM Kashipur?

A: My vision is to take IIM Kashipur amongst the top 10 B-schools in India within 10 years. All the stakeholders including the Board of Governors, faculty members, and students are working towards this goal and we will achieve that.
