Our Love Of Dinosaurs Will Never Be Extinct

Dinosaurs may have roamed the earth many millions of years ago but they’ve never gone out of fashion. This entertaining article looks at our love of all things prehistoric, and highlights a new exhibition in Luton.

May 22, 2012 - PRLog -- Considering that even the most conservative estimates have dinosaurs becoming extinct 65 million years ago, it is amazing that many of us are still fascinated with these huge creatures.

Dinosaur merchandise, films, books and images are everywhere and it’s not just kids and serious scientists who are hooked. Tens of thousands of people visit The Natural History Museum every year for example and for most the T-rex and its cousins are top of the must-see list. We have never seen them and yet we know a great deal about their lives and habits.

Of course no self respecting kid under six would be seen without a dinosaur t-shirt, video game or even a cuddly toy. Cartoons dominate big chunks of the children’s’ television schedule and grown-ups have their own versions on television and the big screen in the shape of Jurassic Park, Walking with Dinosaurs, Planet Dinosaurs and more. These feature stunning animations based on scientific research and the imagination of expert story-tellers.

We don’t seem to mind that much of this material is supposition; we need to believe the larger-than-life story which ended when some catastrophic event wiped them out.

Dinosaurs were a diverse group of animals which first appeared during the Triassic period approximately 230 million years ago. They became the dominant vertebrates for 135 million years until about 65.5 million years ago when most groups became extinct.

Most of what we know about dinosaurs comes from fossils which give a tantalising glimpse into this lost world. They form a jigsaw from which we are gradually getting a picture of the creatures which roamed the earth so long ago.

The latest dinosaur hit is an exhibition, DinoMites, which is in Luton until November 4.
Children and adults travel back 150 million years to come face to face with baby and juvenile dinosaurs. The exhibition covers the A to Z of all things dinosaur from the armour that protected plant eaters, including Polacanthus, to zoos. Each display and interactive exhibit explores a different aspect of the prehistoric world, and takes the visitor through the lives of these animals from hatching out of their eggs to a peaceful forest death.

This amazing new exhibition features baby and juvenile dinosaurs and shows the life cycles of smaller species. If you are planning to visit the exhibition at the Stockwood Discovery Centre Google hotels in Luton to see what’s on offer and make a weekend of it – the kids will love you for it!

Luton also has plenty to offer for all the family including excellent shopping cultural events and a vibrant night life.
