Tori Lawrence + Co performs AWAKENED RUINS at the opening of the Barnes Foundation

Tori Lawrence + Co. is excited to announce that their dance installation, Awakened Ruins, will be presented during the opening of The Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia.  The performance will take place on Monday, May 28 at 9AM and will be performed inside the Light Court.  Admission is free, but tickets should be reserved in advance.   There is no assigned seating for this event (audience is mobile and allowed to view the piece from a perspective of their choosing).

Awakened Ruins was originally performed and created inside the historic and renowned Founder’s Hall (built 1833-1847) located on Girard College’s campus.  It premiered in the 2011 Philly Fringe Festival.  Choreographer/director, Tori Lawrence and her four dancers, Emily Herchenroether, Tina Knipp, Ashley Lippolis, and Pamela Vail embody the layering and crumbling surfaces of decaying buildings both in their unique costume and movement. Architecturally constructed themselves and fully coated in uneven and congealed patches of thick, dried, clay-like material, the dancers’ become and reveal these forgotten spaces.

Embarking on an ambitious endeavor to embody the erosion of time, and the allure of these forgotten remnants of structural acclaim, choreographer Tori Lawrence commenced collaboration with violinist, Christopher Brooks, and pianist, Patrick Fink. The live musical score was created and set during the creation of the movement and choreography. The audience experiences a journey of bodies seamlessly transitioning from and into the space and sound.

Inspired by the forgotten, antiquated, deteriorating, grand, and common, Tori Lawrence + Co. creates innovative site-specific dance projects and dance films that investigate the relationship between movement and place. The Philadelphia-based modern dance company is a group of movement artists, musicians, filmmakers, and designers that embed intelligent art into historic buildings and landscapes, creating worlds where imagination, architecture, and dance intersect. The live performances invite diverse audiences to appreciate and explore, with active senses, the connection between people and place.  Tori Lawrence + Co. is currently in residence at Mascher Space Cooperative and they were a 2011 company-in-residence at Girard College.  www.torilawrenceco.com
