San Diego Rowing Club to Create Corporate Competition on the Water

May 11, 2012 - PRLog -- SAN DIEGO -- The historic San Diego Rowing Club ("SDRC"), founded in 1888 is launching San Diego's first corporate league and team-building program.  The league is modeled after the Oklahoma City corporate league which began in 2005, and has grown into a 30 company/72 team league that pits crew teams in "friendly" head-to-head competition against their business world competitors.

"I have been encouraged by the initial response from our board and general membership for the creation of a corporate league in San Diego," said Griffin Elrod, San Diego Rowing League's Commissioner.  "We have the great water of Mission Bay, year-round rowing, and numerous candidate companies in San Diego from which to draw our teams.  I cannot imagine a better environment, climate, and city to launch this program."

Some of the multiple benefits that a company will realize through its participation in the league are enabling a healthy lifestyle and enhancing employee relations.  Considered the ultimate team sport, rowing fits neatly into most company's wellness programs, and weaves a cohesive fabric between co-employees on and off the water.

“We are very excited about launching the first-ever rowing league in America’s Finest City” says  SDRC’s President, Chris Feuge.  “We can offer local companies an opportunity to sponsor one or more ‘employee’ teams for an 11-week season that culminates with a time trial and 500 meter regatta.”

JoAnn Vallese, San Diego Rowing Club’s Team-Building Coordinator, has been a coxswain for over 20 years, and has guided crew teams at the collegiate and Masters levels.  JoAnn effuses “I have long dreamed of a rowing league here in San Diego.  There is no reason to think we can’t duplicate the successes we have seen in the development of rowing leagues in Boston, Philadelphia, and Oklahoma City.”  JoAnn has also developed SDRC’s Team-Building Program and says, "if your company is unsure about making an 11-week commitment to the League, you can sign-up for our half-day team-building program where individuals learn to row together and experience how the fundamentals of rowing translate into a more dynamic and cohesive workplace.”

This is a win-win opportunity for companies and for their employees.  The company sends out a group of individuals to learn and compete in the sport of rowing and a ‘team’ returns to the workplace.  Happy, healthy workers, sharing a row - competing together - builds cohesion and improves communication in the workplace.  That is why many consider rowing to be the ultimate team-building sport.
