"Amateur Fundraising" With New Facebook App

501(c)(3) nonprofits used to rule online giving on Facebook. Now thousands of "amateur" fundraisers have sprouted up to democratize social philanthropy

May 6, 2012 - PRLog -- Through the  Facebook Donation App  (http://www.facebook.com/donateapp), anyone with a PayPal account can accept donations.  Thousands of peer-to-peer fundraisers have kicked off campaigns to accept donations from their social networks.  Everything from raising money for a dog's surgery to fundraising to pay for vandalism damages to a school - nearly one million dollars has been raised through the  Facebook Donate App  (http://www.facebook.com/donateapp).

Previously,  501(c)(3) nonprofits would reap the awards of social fundraising on Facebook.  Popular apps like Causes and FirstGiving only allowed registered nonprofits to be recipients of charitable giving through social networks.  Now anyone with a PayPal account can compete with even the largest nonprofits for a share of their friends' charitable giving.

The concept of peer-to-peer fundraising is not new.  PayPal donations have been around for years.  However, combining the ease of PayPal with the viral and social power of Facebook is changing the landscape of online giving.  Expect to see more "amateur fundraising" taking a larger share of donations away from large charities and religious organizations.
