Escape Fish Bar | San Diego’s Best Kept Secret!

When it comes to the best San Diego Seafood Restaurant, you must include Escape Fish Bar in the Gaslamp district of San Diego. Opened for less than a year they have captured a 4 star rating on all the rating directories.

May 2, 2012 - PRLog -- Tucked in between a more prominent Gaslamp restaurant and jewelry store the Escape Fish Bar is easy to overlook, but shouldn’t be. The restaurant is located at 738 Fifth Ave. between F & G on the west side of the street and is well worth looking for. Escape Fish Bar offers the best seafood in San Diego with a very unique menu of choices.

In their first year of business this restaurant has acquired ratings of 5 stars on Google, Yelp, Tripadvisor, Urbanspoon and others. These ratings are giving Escape a reputation for providing a unique dining experience. Escape is a casual, petite seafood alcove that offers the freshest catch, a wide selection of local craft beers, and an ample wine selection.

Founded and operated by local attorney, Scott Quan, Escape Fish Bar was inspired by a small eatery named Red Fish Blue Fish which operates out of a converted shipping container located right on the pier in Victoria harbor, British Columbia. Patrons line up in droves for their fresh catch of the day. Scott was so taken by this eatery that he decided to convert one of his three yogurt stores, in San Diego, into what is now the Escape Fish Bar.

Although Scott was a good cook he knew he needed help in putting his idea together for the San Diego area. He flew the chef and owner of the Red Fish Blue Fish eatery to San Diego to work with him on designing the menu. He also brought his friend Chef Ivoreno Brigitha in from Costa Rico to put the finishing touches on his concept. What resulted is a blend of influences from Central America, Asian and Pacific Northwest cuisines.

Seafood is the primary offering with daily specials that reflect the current seasonal offerings such as sea bass, oysters and crab cakes. The menu is concise: tapas, soups, salads and entrees with many Asian and Central American-influenced seafood options available. Seafood tacones, their signature dish, allows you to select either grilled or tempura battered fish. You can choose from Pollock, mahi mahi, salmon, albacore, yellowtail, ahi, mango shrimp, or local halibut. Each plate is served with either a side of rice, potato or slaw.

If soup is what you’re looking for, you must try their Chipotle Coconut Milk Seafood Chowder. This is not your grandma’s soup, but a soup that is pleasantly spicy, filled with vegetables in chipotle puree and coconut milk broth topped with large pieces of Alaskan white fish. You may find, as others have, that this chowder is very addictive. It’s one of those dishes that you can’t get enough of. It’s great for those who are lactose intolerant.

At first glance it seems that their menu is small until you realize that you can not only select your fish, but tell them how you want it cooked making you feel that your meal was prepared just for you. This is another reason why Escape Fish Bar offers the best and most unique dining experience in San Diego. You won’t be disappointed by visiting them in the Gaslamp district.
