Out of the box this product is not amazing. The user interface seems rather limited, the web browser feels like you are using dial-up, and you are limited to the amazon market place which simply pales in comparison to even the shadow of the Android market place now known as Google Play. That being said, the screen does have good contrast, the device as a whole rarely lags, and the size/weight of the device is perfect for lounging around reading or playing games.
The Fire really shines though once you have rooted it. After the root you can add the newest OS for Android like ICS, replace the web browser, have access to Google Play, install a N64 emulator, change the background/start-up images, and so much more. After the root I absolutely love the Kindle Fire. Yes, it took a little work to make this device a 5 star, but it was so worth it. Without the root I would be tempted to give it a 2/5 rating but luckily my experience didn't stop there.

Let me first describe an issue I've encountered with the Kindle Fire before I review the device... If you view the screen on the Kindle Fire at a certain angle, you can see the array of electrodes and parts that make up the screen. I compared my Kindle Fire to another Kindle Fire, which did not exhibit the same issue. Since I got a refurbished Kindle Fire, I expect the first owner to have returned it for this issue. In terms of use, the defect is not noticeable during use and does not affect the quality of the screen. I enjoy watching free prime instant videos on the Kindle Fire as well as surfing the internet. However, I find the Kindle Fire lacking in its lack of native support for essential apps such as Facebook, Spotify, DropBox, Onlive Desktop. The GUI is very nice, however quick access to enable networking and volume controls could be improved. Since it is quite unwieldy to use a tablet to take pictures or as a GPS in the car, I think the omission of these features was a wise decision by Amazon to cut costs. The build quality of the Kindle Fire appears to be quite solid and the IPS screen in the Fire is vibrant and offers good contrast. Compared to an iPad, the Kindle Fire is noticeably thicker and heavier for its size. As a consumer of many Amazon services, I find the Kindle Fire to be a wonderful device. However, if you are already committed to the Apple/iTunes ecosystem, I would advise you to purchase an iPad instead.

I recently purchased the Kindle Touch 3G and really liked it except that there was no backlight in case you were reading at night. I returned the item and purchased the Kindle Fire. So far I love it!!! It's very easy to use and the colors are amazing. The apps are really fun and helpful. The touch feature is very responsive. I changed my background to a parchment color for reading and it is much easier on the eyes. Also recommend changing your font. Only issue for me is I'm not in a strong Wi-Fi area so it's difficult to download and search. Really fast when you do have Wi-Fi hotspot. Liked the 3G + Wi-Fi on my other Kindle. It would be awesome feature to add 3G to a new Kindle Fire. Of course I know the IPAD is out there, but I really only need a Kindle. Really satisfied so far and would highly recommend.

I am still amazed at the looks, performance, and the capabilities of the Kindle Fire. The unit arrived fully charged and the set up took only a few minutes. At first I was a bit concerned about how the books from my other Kindle would transfer but after the quick set up was complete, all my stuff was neatly displayed on the bookshelf. The browser is lightning-fast, the display is clear and crisp with very minimal glare. I have read several reviews about the lack of Apps or the difficulty of finding them in the Apps Marketplace. I did not have the slightest problem finding what I wanted. I downloaded Netflix and a few others in seconds. Now everything is up and running as I want it. Lastly, the battery life is incredible. I charged it 3 days ago and it is still nearly full. A wonderful product, I'm very satisfied with it. Thanks Amazon!
