Gearing up for Chelsea by adding structural steel

Spring is a time when everyone’s thoughts turn to their gardens. But for the experienced gardener garden design doesn’t stop at the planting. Adding structure and sculpture to your garden gives an instant WOW factor, as this article highlights.

April 12, 2012 - PRLog -- Give your garden va-va-voom with a bespoke steel structure – budget permitting!  Sometimes it can be difficult to know what to do next to add something new to your garden, especially if you have lovingly cared for the planting for year after year and you don’t really want to rip it out and start again.

If you are considering investing some money in a mature garden why not think about sculptures, water features and other additions such as bespoke gates or bespoke railings?  Inspiration can come from magazines, visiting friends or the television but there is nothing like getting out and experiencing innovative gardens for yourself.

One major event on everyone’s calendar is the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower show which is being held from 22nd – 26th May at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea.

Showcasing the very best in garden design and innovation, RHS Chelsea is known world-wide for it’s show gardens – 11 of them this year sponsored by big names with budgets to match.

Every year the show gardens get bigger and better, crazier and more outrageous. Last year saw celebrity garden designer Diamuid Gavin experience health and safety issues with his design for B&Q.   Not one to stop at a border full of begonias, Gavin last year suspended a huge steel structure from a crane in his interpretation of a “floating garden”.  However high winds meant that the garden had to be closed at times, due to the movement of the structure and concerns over health and safety.

Taking the title of Best Garden for the last three years has been The Daily Telegraph and hoping to make it a fourth Gold in a row is garden designer Sarah Price.  This will be the first time Sarah Price has designed a major show garden for Chelsea, and the first large garden at the show she has designed on her own.

But the show-stopping, headline-grabbing gardens of Chelsea are not the only gardens to feature stunning ironwork. The gardens of Cawdor Castle in Nairn, Scotland have been boosted with a £100,000 bronze sculpture which had to be lowered into place by helicopter last year.  The Tree of Life, which weighed over 800 kilos was designed by Isle of Arran artist Tim Pomeroy after being commissioned by Dowager Countess, Angelicka Cawdor.

Alnwick Gardens in Northumberland have a similar penchant for bespoke steel structures and water features, but are perhaps best known for their stunning tree house, at the heart of which is one of the most beautiful and unique restaurants to be found anywhere in the world.

Whilst the tree continues to grow through the floor, a roaring fire in the centre of the room ensure the magical tree house stays snug whatever the weather.

The whole gardens at Alnwick span over 12 acres and include themes from different cultures and historical periods. It just goes to show, where gardening is concerned, no matter where you are in the world, there is inspiration all around.
