Much has been written about the 2012 Mayan Prophecy. Some are words of doom, some are words of hope and renewal. But, how to differentiate between what the Mayan tradition really says about 2012, and all the positive or scary meanings that we have attached to this year?

At last, a book which brings clarity to the subject. After providing an overview of what the Mayans said, and some examples of what has been added by our contemporaries without supporting evidences, “Mayan Prophecy: the truth about 2012 Maya Prophecy” offers selected historic texts to penetrate the Mayan culture. In appendix, the book offers practical wisdom to make the best of the present and coming years of transition.

To understand the meaning of 2012, we need to start from the Mayan calendar ( http://www.amareway.org/holisticliving/04/free-kindle-boo... ), which consists of several cycles. There was a 260 day count (Tzolkin, or Tzolk'in). A 365-day solar year known as the Haab. A 584-day Venus cycle was maintained, and some events - like warfare - were astrologically timed to coincide with stages in this cycle.

To track longer periods of time, and in official cronologies, the Long Count was used, which starts from a mythological starting-point, equivalent to August 11, 3114 BCE in the Gregorian calendar according to the Goodman-Martinez-Thompson interpretation. It is important to note that, considering the length of times considered, a minor mistake in contemporary calculations may have resulted in errors of months/years. The cycles of the Long Count are independent of the solar year.
