Improved Regulatory Compliance, Reduced Transcription Errors, Improved Analytical Performance

The growing use of handheld mobile computers has paved the way for the introduction of very varied and innovative applications. CSols is spearheading the development and introduction of imaginative and versatile software by developing new laboratory applications that can be used on personal computers and handheld computing devices in the water and environmental industries to better meet regulatory requirements.

CSols ‘BactiAnalyst’ handheld computer system is used to routinely analyse samples at the EA’s Starcross National Laboratory Service Microbiology laboratory near Exeter. The BactiAnalyst system has enabled the laboratory to make considerable time savings and has resulted in improvements in overall data quality compared to using conventional paperwork based recording and labelling systems. The laboratory analyses over 37,000 samples per year generating about 175,000 results. The majority of samples taken are tested to ensure compliance with the EU ‘Blue Flag’ Bathing Water Directive.

CSols Remote Sampler mobile software application delivers enhanced audit trails and significant time and cost savings at Northern Ireland Water (NIW). The application is tightly integrated with NIW’s LIMS system to meet enhanced regulatory requirements as part of its continuous focus on improving the efficiency and integrity of their sampling collection and monitoring process. CSols Remote Sampler helps guide external field sampling and data collection to eliminate all paper transactions and provides a two way electronic interface with LIMS. Overall Remote Sampler provides a secure and auditable custody trail throughout the sampling process and in turn is helping NIW save a considerable amount of time carrying out routine administration and correcting transcription errors. CSols is currently deploying Remote Sampler mobile solutions in several water companies in the UK and Netherlands to meet UKAS, DWI, European and other regulatory requirements.

CSols AqcTools software is a new application that provides laboratories with dedicated statistical analysis and charting of all analytical quality control samples. AqcTools software enables improved monitoring of instrument and analytical performance and hence correct and timely intervention to ensure that regulatory requirements are always met and that the highest sample result quality is released at all times. South West Water were directly involved in the design of the AqcTools software package. “It’s been very useful to actively contribute to the features of the software,” says John Watson, Quality Manager at South West Water’s Laboratory. “Now we have all the functions and parameters we specifically needed, particularly for trending and reviewing quality control data, which were missing from the general purpose QC software tools that we investigated,” continued John. AqcTools at SWW is also tightly integrated with laboratory instruments and their data and with SWW’s LIMS.

CSols ‘LabCache’ database is used for the management of all quality data. “The tight integration with LIMS means that we have both minimized our IT support costs for this new application as well as opened up new uses for the combined solution”, says Gareth Brand, South West Water’s IS Project Manager.  “We’re delighted to be working with South West Water,” says Dr. Phil Goddard, CEO of CSols. “The transcription free analysis of data and new parameters we are providing are already benefiting the Exeter laboratory by providing real time alerts and also in the reduced analyst effort needed to access QC statistics and charting before AqcTools was implemented,” concluded Phil.

Kim Holt (Laboratory Manager, South West Water and Phil Goddard, Managing Director, CSols Ltd., will be discussing "Maintaining Optimal Quality of Analysis Using The Right Lab Informatics Tools and Processes" at the BMTA meeting in Southampton. This talk will cover the scoping, development, key challenges and the success of the AqcTools software development project with South West Water. There will be discussion of  major advances in the charting, reporting and auditing of Analytical Quality Control (AQC) samples to meet DWI, UKAS and other regulatory requirements. Topics will include lifecycle testing and validation of software and validation of laboratories, test methods and laboratory software.

2nd May 2012 - Focus 2012 (Association for Clinical Biochemistry) - Liverpool
Rachel Henderson from Heartlands Hospital, Birmingham.will be presenting a poster at the Focus 2012 on using CSols software for "Transcription free integration between ABSciex LC MS-MS instruments and the iSoft Telepath system for routine Vitamin D Analysis".

4th July 2012 - EMMSSIG Workshop - Manchester
There will be a presentation on "Maintaining Optimal Quality of Analysis Using The Right Lab Informatics Tools and Processes". This will cover the scoping and development of the AqcTools development project with South West Water, the key challenges and how they were overcome.
