Internet Explorer 6 should be retired now

March 31, 2012 - PRLog -- I'm still amazed by just how many people are using Internet Explorer 6. That's easy. What's hard is trying to understand why. There are no tabs and it has some unique and frustrating interpretations of how web pages should be displayed. So I wasn't really surprised to find another press release in my inbox this morning about a company removing support for Internet Explorer 6.

Internet Explorer 6 is now ten years old and the web has moved on a long way since then. The subject of the press release, thepayrollsite.co.uk, is not really a site for home users but it joins a growing list of sites that no longer support this anachronistic browser including Google Docs, Facebook and YouTube.

So if you're still using it, please stop. I won't even object if you don't read any more of this article. Go to the Internet Explorer page if you want to stick this browser family but you might be pleasantly surprised if you give the alternatives Firefox or Opera a go.

Even Microsoft is watching the last throws of Internet Explorer 6 on a dedicated webpage called the Internet Explorer 6 Countdown. Sadly 7.7% of the world is still using Internet Explorer 6, China is the biggest culprit with a quarter of internet uses there on IE 6.

What I rather like about the site is it includes instructions for including a banner on your website that will only appear to people using IE6 telling them to stop. I'm not really sure if I can be bother to test it works in IE6 but there is a link to a page with links to download virtual computers with different versions of Internet Explorer for testing.

I removed support for Internet Explorer 6 myself as a web designer because it was just causing too much work. It doesn't have any developer tools built in so fixing bugs is much harder than other browsers. And it creates bugs from web pages that worked fine in everything else. If you are the kind of person who likes tinkering and looking at the code that makes web sites work, you'll probably find plenty of references indicating that sections of code exist purely to stop the site breaking Internet Explorer 6.
