The Women's Premier Soccer League is an independent national league whose main focus is on the development of highly competitive premier women's soccer teams. WPSL team rosters feature college, post-college, foreign players and talented high school players every year. The WPSL season runs from May 1 to August 6, giving players the opportunity to play competitive soccer and maintain conditioning throughout the summer. The WPSL was formed in 1998 and is sanctioned by the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) as an affiliate of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), the ruling body of soccer in the United States, and FIFA, the world's ruling body for soccer.  

In response to the WPS suspending the 2012 Women’s Soccer Season, the WPSL launched the Elite League featuring eight teams: The Boston Breakers, Philadelphia Fever, Western New York Flash, Chicago Red Stars, FC Indiana, New England Mutiny, New York Fury, and ASA Chesapeake Charge.
