Easter in Barcelona 2012- Celebrate Semana Santa in the Catalan Capital

Come to Barcelona this spring to celebrate Easter. Semana Santa will be taking place the week of Friday April 6, 2012 and Barcelona will celebrate accordingly with parades, traditional foods, and Easter gifts for children.

March 7, 2012 - PRLog -- The holy week of Easter known as Semana Santa is a lively time for visitors to come to Barcelona. It is common for many locals to celebrate Easter elsewhere during this period and over 600,000 residents travel to nearby towns to enjoy the Catholic holiday, leaving the city for visitors to explore. With traditional foods, festivities and fun, Barcelona is a great place to come to celebrate Easter.

Food
As a predominantly Catholic city, the tradition of not eating meat on Good Friday is alive among the citizens of Barcelona. Locals indulge in the deliciousEaster tradition of fish for the day. On Easter Monday visitors can also find the most fabulous and delectable treats, including “Bunyols”, “Torrijas”, “Rosca de Pascua”, “Pestinos” and most importantly, the traditional Easter cake, “La Mona de Pascua.”

Easter Gifts
Godparents typically give their godchildren various small gifts to commemorate the resurrection of Christ. Usually, these gifts will be small chocolate figures, or eggs to symbolize the rebirth and new life of Jesus. Also they will give their own Monas de Pascua to the children, and they can range in shapes and sizes from cartoon characters to animals.

Parades & Processions
There are many Easter parades and processions in Barcelona. One of the first to appear is known as the “Paso de la Borriquita” and takes place on Palm Sunday in the Ciutat Vella, commemorating the arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem on a donkey. Visitors can buy bleached palm fronds to wave during this parade and you can see large floats and structures going by, some of which are carried by members of the procession.

Closing Time
It is important to make note of the changed hours and schedules of the attractions and stores you would like to visit during your time in Barcelona. Especially take note of opening hours during the days Friday April 6th, Sunday April 8th, and Monday April 9th, since most places are not open at all during these religious commemoration days.
