How You Can Use Your Own Blood to Get a Smoother Complexion

A new treatment uses your own blood platelets to give your face a more youthful appearance.

March 2, 2012 - PRLog -- If you’ve avoided non-surgical cosmetic facial treatments because you’re reluctant to have artificial concoctions injected into your face, you might want to talk to your New York plastic surgeon about Selphyl®. A patented new technology that provides a natural defense against the aging process, Selphyl uses the platelets from your own blood to rejuvenate your face.
As your face ages, your tissue loses volume and lines appear in places where the skin has become used to folding. Selphyl stimulates new cell growth beneath the skin surface to plump up and smooth out areas that have begun to sag or sink. The process is simple. From a just a small blood sample, your plastic surgeon can extract blood platelets and fibers to produce what’s called a platelet-rich fibrin matrix (PRFM). This matrix is then injected under the problem areas in your skin, allowing new cells to fill in vacant spaces beneath crow’s feet, under your cheeks and eyes, around your mouth, and even under acne pock marks. The resulting aesthetic effect is younger, smoother looking skin.
Because this 45-minute treatment uses your own blood, there’s virtually no danger of an allergic reaction. Unlike a BOTOX® treatment, a New York Selphyl treatment inserts absolutely no artificial toxins into your body. In addition, the short procedure and recovery period are relatively painless. Because the PRFM is a fluid, you won’t find unattractive lumps or knots forming beneath your skin after a Selphyl treatment. Also, in contrast to the temporary results of several popular dermal fillers, the restorative results of a Selphyl procedure can last for up to eighteen months.
When you visit your doctor’s office for a Selphyl injection, blood is drawn just as if you were getting lab work done for a checkup. The sample is placed in a centrifuge that separates the platelet-rich plasma from the red and white blood cells. Meanwhile, your face is cleansed and numbed using a topical cream anesthetic. In most cases, a non-ablative laser treatment is performed to enhance the restorative effect.
Minutes later, the clear, yellow PRFM is injected into your skin, where it immediately starts to encourage the production of collagen and new cells. Cold compresses are applied to reduce swelling, and you’re done! A single 45-minute procedure is all you may need. You won’t even need pain medication. Although you might experience some mild swelling or redness immediately following the Selphyl procedure, your face should feel smoother, with more defined and luminous skin, within 10 days to three weeks.
