By: Angela Gentry In Lam’s Youtube videos, the camera looks over her shoulder as she enthusiastically demonstrates how to prepare dishes such as prawns with French beans and Noodles with fish with kai lan. A plant lover, Lam also shows off her home-grown mint and chili plants, explaining how to use these natural flavours, along with lemongrass and galangal, to improve homemade dishes. “It’s easy to learn how to cook with love, laughter, and a lot of fun,” said Lam. Lam’s excitement shines through in every video, her expressive speech and vocal sound effects making her videos just as entertaining to listen to as to watch. While the average cooking class video is only eight minutes long, each ingredient is introduced and each step shown with care. The YouTube series follows years of guest television appearances by Lam, who has been featured on Daily Cooks, Market Kitchen, This Morning, Trust Me - I'm A Holiday Rep, Big Brother’s Big Mouth, Hole in the Wall, Saturday Night Takeaway, Let’s Dance for Comic Relief, and the UK’s Big Brother 2010. Lam is a familiar face on the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Channel 5. In print, Lam has been featured by The Times, The Guardian, The Straits Times, the London Evening Standard, Metro, and many other publications. Her “day job,” however, is as the owner and operator of her Indonesian restaurant in Battersea, London called Enak Enak, whose name means “yummy yummy” in Indonesian. Despite Lam’s busy schedule, her new cooking series was released in tandem with a website dedicated to promoting her YouTube channel. But the website is more than a YouTube ad—it also offers treats like a blog article on popular Indonesian dishes, a chance to sign up for free cooking tips by e-mail, Lam’s Twitter feed, a link to her Facebook, an interactive map showing the location of her Indonesian restaurant, and the opportunity to book a table at her restaurant online. Website visitors can also purchase an autographed copy of her cookbook, Nancy Lam Stirs It Up, with a custom message, which can be shipped worldwide.
