Feb. 23, 2012 - PRLog -- Children's beds come in many different styles and types. These include bunk beds, trundle beds, loft beds, captains beds, day beds, and themed beds. It can be confusing if one does not know the differences and features of all these types of beds. In order to make an informed decision about which bed to buy for your child, let us explore each type in detail.

Bunk beds and trundle beds are space-saving in that two beds take the space of one. With a bunk bed, the two beds are usually twin-sized and are stacked one directly above the other on a frame typically made of metal or wood. Bunk bed sets have a built-in or detachable ladder for the child to use when climbing onto the top bunk. The top bunk is generally used only by older children for reasons of safety. When buying a bunk bed, be sure the top bunk has adequate safety rails.

A trundle bed looks like a single bed, but underneath the bed is a platform with a slightly smaller thin mattress that can be pulled out when needed. Some trundle beds can be raised up beside the upper bed to form a level sleeping space for more than one child. Alternately, the lower mattress could be removed, and the platform could be used for storage space.

Loft beds are an interesting alternative type of bed for older youths or teens, again, because of safety concerns. The bed is actually fairly high off the ground, with a ladder leading to the bed. Under the bed can be found play space, a desk, a set of bookshelves, a futon chair, or a combination of these elements. As with bunk beds and trundle beds, the purpose of this choice of kids beds is to utilize smaller spaces efficiently.

A captains bed or storage bed has a tall frame which has storage space underneath in the form of drawers or shelves or both. This often eliminates the need to buy other furniture, which is a nice element. Day beds are a type of bed that can be used for sitting or lounging when not in use for sleeping. They usually feature sides and a back and can also have a trundle-type piece to facilitate sleeping. These types of beds are practical for children who visit occasionally, but not necessarily for daily use because of the work involved in setting up the bed.

The most popular types of kids beds are themed beds. Many people choose to decorate their children's bedroom with a theme such as princesses, sports, or butterflies. The bed is usually the centerpiece of the room, and there are many fun themes from which to choose.
