This is the most reliable and easiest way to find out the reason of the "Check engine" light become active. Cars operate under a standardized On-Board Diagnostic coding system, but currently, there are two types of code available. For cars manufactured before 1996, the hardware needs to know OBD I fault codes. Cars which manufactured after 1996 need OBD 2, and most scanners are not reverse-compatible. An OBD 2 scanner will not understand OBD I trouble codes. So before purchasing any diagnostic tool, know the manufacture year and model first. Once that is settled, retrieving the codes is a very simple process.

Open the driver's side door, and plug the Mazda's key into the ignition. Leave the car off for the time being, but you will be returning to this key later.
Find out the Mazda's diagnostic port. This outlet is the way into your Mazda's diagnostic system, and you should be able to find it somewhere under the instrument panel for most car, if you cannot find it, you should consult the user manual of your car.
Connect the OBD 2 scanner into the diagnostic port of your car. To do this, you will use the cable attached to the scanner, which ends in 16-pinned plug. This plug should be simple to push into place. If the port resists, push firmly, but do not force it.
Turn the key in the Mazda's ignition and power the car on.
Watch the codes displayed on the scanner's screen. Many OBD 2 scanners will not supply a definition and translation, so you have to write down the reported fault OBD code on a piece of paper and look it up. Using Google, Bing or any other search engine, you can find a decoder, such as “Engine Light Help”. It would not be difficult.
