In an exclusive interview with Privcap, David Wilton, Chief Investment Officer for Global Private Equity at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), discusses the origins of the IFC’s private equity mandate and its track record to date. This division of the World Bank was an early backer of general partners in markets like China and Brazil that only in recent years have begun to be embraced by mainstream institutional investors.

Wilton also discusses the IFC’s expanding geographic focus (hello, Cambodia), its high standards for selecting fund managers, and its mandate for eventually putting itself out of business, so to speak.

David Wilton is the Chief Investment Officer and Manager of Global Private Equity and Investment Funds at International Finance Corporation. He previously managed the World Bank Pension Fund’s private equity and real estate portfolios. Prior to that, Wilton analysed the functioning of money and bond markets in many emerging markets for the World Bank to identify improvements that would lower the cost of government funding and improve private access. He is also a Member of the Advisory Board at ZN Mexico Trust I and ZN Mexico Trust II, L.P. Wilton is a Member of Africa Council of Emerging Markets Private Equity Association.
