From the Red Carpet to Real Women

because let's get serious, the likes of Joan Rivers have made it very clear there's no in between. You know what I think? Instead of judging these women we should be learning from them, especially when it comes to beauty. The recent influx of navy blue, the underdog of neutrals if you ask me, is a perfect example of a totally translatable trend. It's showing up on dresses, makeup, nails—you name it, it's being made in navy. I know, I know, what does this mean to you? Well, few "real women" (including me!) feel inclined to walk into work with a full on smokey navy eye. That's where Stephen Dimmick, NYC-based makeup artist, comes in. When he's not beautifying the pages of Vogue Italia or drawing winged eyeliner on the Kardashians, he's thinking about the everyday woman's beauty routine. "I'm never swayed by the color of the season," he says, "but when it's all about one color, I go with an eyeliner. It's a reasonable expense for a trend that may or may not be forever." He put together a beautiful, demure look suitable for the office, girl's night, and everything in between.

Get a subtle, youthful smokiness with a Kohl eyeliner. Rub the pencil right in between the lashes, and don't worry about being neat. Take a Q-Tip or a small, round brush to blend the edges for a really subtle smokey effect. Don't leave any hard lines—they age us.

Keep your eyeshadow neutral. Stay in the beige and cream families. If you love the way your eyes look with a defined crease, go with a brown hue instead of blue. Too much blue eyeshadow=1980's dance recital! Finish the eye with a little mascara.

Skip the pink blush and finish with lipstick instead. Rosy pink looks great with navy blue. Pick one with some sheen; something bright and youthful without looking too made up or stuffy. Remember, you want to keep the attention on the eye!
