Jan. 23, 2012 - PRLog -- NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – January 23, 2012— Somnia Anesthesia, a leading national anesthesia management company, has announced a new white paper and webinar explaining how the anesthesia care team model, which includes Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), enables hospitals to augment or expand surgical services and provide a higher level of care.  It also describes the history of the CRNA profession and its education and training requirements. The free webinar, sponsored by Somnia and hosted by Becker’s Hospital Review on
February 28 at 2:15 EST, will describe the successes realized by two West Coast hospitals that implemented the team care model.  Presenters include a seasoned CRNA currently working at a California hospital and a chief of anesthesia who oversees a blended care model at a Washington-based facility. Register for the webinar at https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/682261650.

CRNAs, whose scope of practice varies from state to state, provide care in both inpatient and ambulatory settings. They are advanced practice nurses who are often the primary anesthesia providers in rural areas and other regions with few healthcare providers. In the team care model, physicians, CRNAs and other clinicians collaborate to provide anesthesia care. In most states, CRNAs must practice under the supervision of a physician.

“The role of CRNAs is often misunderstood by both healthcare providers and administrators,” said Robert C. Goldstein, MD, executive vice president and chief medical officer of Somnia Anesthesia. “As part of the care team model CRNAs support, and do not eliminate, the important role of anesthesiologists. Their role is similar to other physician extenders such as nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Patients benefit because they have two clinicians collaborating on their anesthesia care, and hospitals benefit from better staffing and OR coverage, and improved efficiency and patient flow.”
