State’s first SAAB chapter: United in Legacy, Moving forward in Excellence

Minneapolis, MN (Source: MCTC/SAAB/B2B/January 18, 2012)…Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) is pleased to announce the Student African American Brotherhood (SAAB) chapter’s Kick-Off Week of Events to be held Jan. 30 to Feb. 4, 2012, at the MCTC campus, 1501 Hennepin Avenue, Minneapolis. All events are free and open to the public.

Under the theme, “United in Legacy, Moving forward in Excellence,” students and staff will host a number events to bring awareness to the educational disparity that exists between African-American male students and other groups on campus, and to celebrate the successes of the College’s chapter during the past year.

SAAB/Brother2Brother is a national organization designed to improve the quality and outcome of education by developing scholarship, accountability, commitment, success, determination, character, community, and identity in student member participants. MCTC’s SAAB/Brother2Brother chapter is the first of its kind in Minnesota.

“The mission of the MCTC chapter of SAAB/Brother2Brother is to embrace and support MCTC African-American male students and all other MCTC students by supporting successful academic progress and character development so that every member achieves program completion while strengthening their roles as engaged members of the MCTC community,” says Jesse Mason, advisor.

Tuesday, Jan. 31
SAAB Open House: Work and history of SAAB since January 2010
8 a.m. to Noon, Kopp Hall, K.3370 (light refreshments will be served)

Wednesday, Feb. 1
Documentary on African American Males “Education, Struggle and Success: Educating Black Males in Public Spaces 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Helland Fine Arts Center, F.1400
