Andrei Iancu Named Managing Partner of Irell & Manella

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – (Jan. 18, 2012) – Irell & Manella LLP has selected Andrei Iancu as its next managing partner. Effective March 1, he will succeed Elliot Brown in the role. Iancu will continue to practice full-time as a member of the firm’s litigation and intellectual property practice groups. He has long been involved with firm management, having previously served on the firm's Executive Committee and currently chairing the Hiring Committee.

“Andrei has established a reputation as one of the country’s leading IP litigators, and through his years of involvement in firm management, he’s earned the trust and confidence of the partners,” stated outgoing Managing Partner Elliot Brown. “Andrei is deeply devoted to the firm and the practice of law, a combination that our past generations of leaders have perfected and Andrei will draw upon to lead us into our next chapter of excellence.”

Iancu has represented some of the country's most well-known companies in a variety of high-profile matters. His clients span the technology spectrum, including those associated with medical devices, multimedia, cell phones and telephony, the Internet, computer software and hardware, and video game systems.

Iancu's leadership, for example, has helped TiVo Inc. secure multiple court victories. Matthew Zinn, General Counsel at TiVo said: “Irell is TiVo's go-to firm for must-win patent litigation. The team has helped us secure outstanding results over the years, including our $500 million settlement with Dish and, most recently, our $215+ million settlement with AT&T. I have personally worked closely with Andrei since 2004. Given the strategic thinking that he has applied to our various cases and the great successes he has helped us achieve over many years, I believe the firm has made a wise choice in selecting Andrei as its next managing partner.”

Iancu has also represented St. Jude Medical, a leading medical device manufacturer, since 2000 in multiple cases and courts across the country. Most recently, he helped St. Jude secure a jury verdict of willful infringement relating to its patents on vascular closure devices. James Ladner, Deputy General Counsel—Litigation at St. Jude Medical, said: "We have worked with Andrei for a very long time, and we are not surprised by the trust his partners have rested in him. The creativity, hard work and leadership with which Andrei runs our cases will likewise serve him and Irell well in his new role as managing partner."

“Elliot has worked tirelessly during his term to strengthen the firm.  He and previous generations of firm leadership, as well as our dedicated attorneys and staff, have not only made Irell & Manella one of the most respected legal institutions but also an ideal place to practice law for lawyers at all stages of their careers,” said Iancu. “I am truly honored to be selected as Elliot's successor and to have the trust of the partnership.”
Iancu has received numerous accolades during his 15 years of practice, including being recognized in the area of intellectual property and patent law by the Chambers USA Leading Lawyers for Business Guide every year since 2007. The Los Angeles and San Francisco Daily Journals named him among the Top 100 attorneys in California in 2011, as well as one of California's leading IP litigators in 2008, 2010 and 2011, and one of the Top 20 California attorneys under 40 in 2006. The Legal 500 also recognized him in the area of patent litigation. International Asset Management magazine described Iancu as an "excellent practitioner" and listed him among California's top patent litigators. Additionally, Iancu has been selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America in the areas of commercial litigation and intellectual property law. He has been named a Southern California "Super Lawyer" every year since 2008 and was featured in the February 2009 issue of Super Lawyers magazine.

In addition to his practice, Iancu is an adjunct professor at the UCLA School of Law where he co-teaches an advanced patent law class. Iancu also frequently writes and speaks on intellectual property law. In 2009, he was awarded the 36th Annual Rossman Award from the Patent and Trademark Office Society for his article "Code on Disks and Hat Tricks - Is Computer Software on a Medium Really Patentable?" published in the February 2008 edition of the Journal of the Patent and Trademark Office Society. This award is given for the Journal article that "makes the greatest contribution to the fields of patents, trademarks and copyrights" during the publication year. His article, "Machines and Transformations: The Past, Present, and Future Patentability of Software," published in the Spring 2010 issue of the Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property, was "judged one of the best law review articles related to patent law" in 2010, and therefore selected for inclusion in Patent Law Review published by Thomson Reuters (West).

Iancu earned his J.D. from the UCLA School of Law (1996), where he was Order of the Coif. He also earned his M.S. in mechanical engineering (1990) from UCLA, where he attended with the Hughes Masters Fellowship, as well as his B.S. in aerospace engineering (1989), also from UCLA, where he was a Regents Scholar and graduated with honors. Prior to law school, Iancu was an engineer at Hughes Aircraft Co., where his innovative design of a new "shaped reflector" for satellite antennas was awarded the Malcolm R. Currie Innovation Award. He is still licensed as a Professional Engineer in California.

Iancu was born in Romania and has lived in the United States since the age of 12. He is married to Dr. Luiza C. Iancu, a practicing physician, and they have two children. Among other community activities, he serves on the board of Sinai Akiba Academy, where his children went to school.
