BACKSIDE FIVE SKATER GRINDS CRASHED ICE
Sponsored Skater to Compete in Red Bull Crashed Ice Championship
January 9, 2012 (HOUSTON) —Baskside Five-sponsored speed skaters Ben Grotting (pictured below) and John Vadnais race in the Red Bull Crashed Ice US Debut this weekend, January 12th-14th at the St. Paul Cathedral in St. Paul, Minnesota. Races begin at 1:30 PM on the first day of competition. The event is free for all spectators.
"I'm looking forward to getting back on the ice in a high end competition,”
Crashed Ice, a mostly downhill speed skating race full of death-defying drops and sick twists and turns arranged in urban areas, is one of the world’s newest high energy winter extreme sports. Founded in 2001, crashed ice has seen 12 years of intensely fierce speed skaters, mostly pedigreed with a hockey background, dash, push, skate and speed their way through courses across the world, including, Europe, Canada and the United States.
Red Bull has sponsored crashed ice since the sport’s inception, reinforcing its image as a supporter of intense winter sports. Backside Five joined sponsorship in the competition as part of its commitment to promoting the extreme action sports industry and encouraging this type of extraordinary racing. The Crashed Ice Championships come amidst a fantastic winter for the company, which recently released its premium winter collection.
As for Grotting and Vandais, a win by either in the competition would make them the first Americans ever to take the championship. Each has his work cut out for him attempting to first qualify to be the US finalist before taking on some of the world’s best crashed ice athletes, including reigning champion Arrtu Pihlainen of Finland.
"We’re proud of Ben and Johny for qualifying and couldn’t be more pumped about the competition,”
