Dec. 21, 2011 - PRLog -- Prince Philip and discretion aren’t familiar bedfellows, so it’s no surprise that The Duke of Edinburgh once again has a size nine wedged between his teeth, denouncing wind turbines as ‘an absolute disgrace’ and ‘useless.’ While his opinion is likely to be based on aesthetic merits rather than environmental ones, it is at odds with Her Majesty’s Government, which has thrown its weight behind the industry. In this issue we take a look at the proposed extension to the Greater Gabbard offshore wind farm, a project that will form the backbone of UK’s wind energy offering in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It’s just as well the forward thinking folk at Suffolk County Council are overseeing the project and not His Royal Highness.

Elsewhere, it’s been a difficult month for Greg Barker, the Climate Change Minister, who recently announced cuts to the Solar Feed-in-Tariff. The honorable gentleman has labeled calls to delay the cuts until April as ‘bonkers’, while members of his department are alleged to have said that solar panels should be no more than ‘rich boys’ toys.’ As such, Mr Barker has had to field criticism from environmentalists, the solar industry and from sections of the media, but all things considered, he’s fair game. In light of said cuts, one could be forgiven for thinking that it’s all doom and gloom within the solar industry. That however isn’t the case, as we found out when we caught up with members of the solar industry, many of whom are justifiably defiant and positive that they will survive. It has also been a busy month at R3. Aside from putting together the magazine, website and blog, we’ve had a reshuffle on the editorial desk, which has seen Gill Anderson hand the reigns over to me. From this month I’ll assume the role of deputy editor, and will be responsible for putting all things editorial at R3 together.

As the industry grows and changes we as a magazine hope to grow and change with it, offering each sector a voice, while providing information and education that will help the country move toward a sustainable future – as such we will always welcome feedback and comments.

Enjoy the issue
