Diabetes can be averted in many cases.  Diabetes is a metabolic disease where the body doesn’t produce adequate insulin to keep blood glucose levels within a normal level. The insulin is needed to unlock the cells of the body so that the sugar can get into to build tissue and give cells energy. If blood glucose levels are consistently high, the unused glucose in the blood can cause damage in the tissues over time.

Diabetes Complications Averted
If someone with diabetes can keep their blood sugars under good control, complications can often be averted.  If a person with diabetes does not keep their blood glucose levels within normal ranges, damage to internal organs and blood vessels can occur over time, causing potential kidney damage, skin disorders, vision changes, heart problems, nerve damage and extremity issues, particularly in the feet due vessel and nerve damage. Generally, blood glucose levels that are consistently over 200 can cause damage within the body.

Symptoms
The symptoms of diabetes are increased urination, increased thirst, increased hunger, fatigue, sometimes weight loss or gain. Once diagnosed, evaluating and altering the diet can sometimes control these symptoms and even avert diabetes, but sometimes medications or even insulin may be necessary to control symptoms of diabetes.

Treatment
To treat people with diabetes, physicians may refer people to a dietician to help with diet and/or lifestyle management, prescribe oral medication or sometimes insulin. Often diabetes can be treated with dietary management only, which may require some dietary lifestyle changes.

Risk Factors
To prevent diabetes of course would be ideal if possible. Some of the risk factors of diabetes are being overweight, tumor or damage to the pancreas, certain medications and certain other diseases such as Cushing’s syndrome and others. There also seems to be some familial tendencies.

Prevention
Nutrition plays a big role in not only preventing, but also managing diabetes as previously mentioned. Healthy diets consist of minimal processed foods, healthier carbohydrates like fruit, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and dairy products (low fat). Good diets also will include plenty of water, fiber, healthy proteins and fats. The body needs adequate exercise or activity, water, whole grains rather than processed grains. Whole grains usually are a better source of fiber also, which the body needs. It is also advisable if you are overweight, to lose weight, but not through unhealthy diets.

With diabetes or anything else, our bodies function better when it has all the necessary nutrients and is missing all the processed and unhealthy foods that appear to be so luring in today’s culture. The major key to preventing and managing diabetes is simply a good nutritious diet. Through good management of our diets, many likely can avert diabetes from developing as well as more effectively manage diabetes if we already have it.

Physicians specializing in diabetes are helping diabetics to better control their glucose levels and are helping in preventing many of the complications that used to be more prevalent in diabetes, so there is hope. If you have diabetes, be sure to communicate any changes in your diet and/or lifestyle to your physician. For more information on healthy options or to lose weight, please contact me.
