Fun and Interactive Life Education for Dunannie Pupils

Pupils from Dunannie, Bedales pre-preparatory school, recently participated in a fun and interactive series of age appropriate life education programmes teaching the children the wonders of the human body and how to look after it.

Dec. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- The programmes were presented by Life Education Wessex, an independent and self-supporting branch of a national charity. The service provides health and drug education to children aged 3-11 years, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and self-confidence to form positive healthy attitudes and make healthy choices.  The organisation is entirely voluntary, with one of its volunteers being an Old Bedalian, and is funded primarily through charitable donations and contributions from schools.

Life Education Wessex’s experienced and specially trained educators (with a little help from Harold, the puppet giraffe) taught Dunannie’s children in Years 1 and 2 about healthy eating, being a good friend and the safe use of medicines in the specially equipped mobile classroom. Children in Year 3 considered the effects and risks associated with the use of drugs, including medicines, alcohol and tobacco.  In addition, children talked about friendships with their peers and what to do if they experience bullying and peer pressure.

All children from Nursery to Year 3 were encouraged to participate through the use of group work, puppets, circle time discussion, drama techniques such as role play and hot seating, music, exercise, electronic models and a variety of audio/visual materials,.

Jo Webbern, Head of Dunannie, praised the scheme and highlighted how relevant it is to the PSHE curriculum commenting “The course complements our existing PSHE curriculum, some of which was put to the test when the children were asked how many bones there are in the human body and they correctly answered 206 as they had already covered this in class.  Some Dunannie parents went in to a specific parent’s session and they were overwhelmingly positive about the programme. The programme enhances what we do on a daily basis but with a different angle and with different resources, and we hope Life Education Wessex will visit Dunannie on an annual basis to supplement the existing PSHE curriculum and enable the children to build on what they learn year on year.”
