Dec. 6, 2011 - PRLog -- As we compile the October 2011 issue of the COMENSAnews, the media is awash with reports about the impending Protection of Information (a.k.a. Secrecy) Bill and the potential blow that it will strike for media independence. "I think most importantly, though, the bill is a shift away from openness, transparency and accountability," said William Bird, the head of Media Monitoring Africa. As editor, this growing lack of independence of the public media resonates with me. I have always tried to ensure that editorial in the COMENSAnews is the following:

Representative the author's original work, thoughts and ideas and correctly referenced when referring to work by somebody else;
Free from politics or agendas, and does not undermine the work being done by the Portfolio Committees, which is at the behest of the Executive Committee who speak on behalf of the membership body;
Does not contain content that might be construed as a sales pitch of bias in favour of a particular product, methodology or tool.

In the process of editing an article for this very issue, I needed to refer back to issues published in 2009 and was delighted to read the quality of articles and contributions. I would encourage you to re-visit previous issues for some wisdom and learning that is still very relevant today. It was also gratifying to see the journey on which we have collectively travelled – with you as contributors to a publication that has grown in stature, and which continues to attract new readers every month.

I would like to continue to assure you of my impartiality and objectivity as an editor, and of my commitment to openness, transparency and accountability in terms of the trust you place in me. I have enjoyed our partnership in growing the COMENSAnews for the last 3 ½ years. Every month, I have been humbled by the quality of the articles that I have received. As we start planning for 2012, let me know what areas you would like the newsletter to cover next year. What sections would you like added or taken away? What improvements would you like to see? Please email me with your comments and suggestions at marketing@comensa.org.za. I look forward to hearing from you!
