By: Shruth & Smith Honorary Advisor, AAMO Dr. Maheshappa, my distinguished colleagues on the dais, distinguished ladies & gentlemen and my young friends, I must say, I am indeed delighted to be here this morning. For me, to get an opportunity to meet so many young friends, the budding professionals, entrepreneurs and future leaders of our country is indeed a very rare privilege. I would like to complement the organizers, the Shruth & Smith and the VTU for having organized this wonderful event. Friends, you heard some wonderful words of wisdom this morning from distinguished speakers. I believe that we, all of us, are living through interesting and exciting times. I am often reminded of the Chinese saying, which says “may you live in exciting times” and I believe these are very exciting times; times, which are full of opportunities and times, which are going to present lot of challenges. It is the challenges in life, which bring the best out of you and which make the success even sweeter. Before I share some of the learning and lessons that I have learnt through my life, 4 decades in the army, and another 2 decades in professional management in the corporate world, I thought of briefly recapping the kind of world that you are going to work through and live through, the kind of environment, which is going to come your way. We all know that even in the human history, the present era has seen the maximum change. To say, the change for humans in the last millennium is more than the changes in the entire history put together. This is truly the era of change and age of uncertainties. You must have heard many a times by many people that the only constant today is ‘change’. You could rightly say that the change is always there; yes, I agree with you. But it is the staggering pace of change, which is making the difference. The future, the next decade, is not going to be the same as these ten years. The changes are so fast, that those who are not going to keep pace with it will be left behind. The Indian economy is going to grow tremendously, despite lot of things, which are happening. This is possible because of increase in globalization, innovations, products & services and greater freedom in the flow of information & capital. A very large number of young Indians are going to join the workforce and these young Indians, like you all, are going to bring different mindset to the working environment. Millions of new consumers are going to come in the market place. Their expectations & aspirations are going to be totally different. You will find that the urban population, in India, is going to increase dramatically, which will bring its own problems and issues, as you are seeing in Bengaluru and we see in Delhi every day; but having said that, Indian economy is going to be one of the biggest economies in the world. We heard Swami Veereshanandaji talking about the knowledge. Friends, twenty first century is going to be the century of knowledge. This is the era of mind and information revolution. It is been said that the wars of twenty first century, and as a soldier I am going to say that, are going to be fought on the power of ideas. Societies will become increasingly knowledge based and will promote increasingly knowledge based industries. The products of mind will dominate the world. It is the world, where there is an explosion of information; Friends, this is the world, which is going to be increasingly driven by fast & advanced technologies and you all, as engineers, would be better placed to understand. This is going to be influencing the lives that we live in, the way we work and the way we think. Many predictions, which were fiction, say twenty years earlier, are now on the ground and they become realities. We have seen the emergence of electronics, entertainment, camera, communications, and music into one technology that totally changed the world. The digital highways are going to make sure that all the knowledge & entertainment available anywhere in the world is available to us. The satellite telephones will enable us to ring up our homes from anywhere in the world. Many industries like education, healthcare, transportation, banking, publishing, pharmaceuticals, are going to be totally transformed because of the technologies and the knowledge. The product life cycles are becoming shorter and what do they mean? They have tremendous implications for the marketing people and the manufacturing people. The great advancements in telecommunications, the internet, have made the world so small that anything happening thousands of miles away is being seen as live in our rooms. That my friends, is going to have great impact the way you think. The cultures are going to impact each other. Anything happening in USA, within few minutes, we pick it up here and our masses get affected. This is going to have its effect on our cultural beans. The concept of closely knit families in India is already changing. The functional hierarchies in the companies are already going through metamorphosis. In this kind of a world, of globalization, the competition within the country and the competition from outside are going to get stiffer and stiffer. Only those who can take advantage of change and potential of knowledge will survive. There is going to be no place for mediocrity. Today, you cannot be a mediocre and hope to do well in this world. Most of the emerging opportunities that will be thrown up have the potential to totally transform the way that you, my friends, when you enter your professional lives, are going to be working. Our country, in the next decade or so, is going to become one of the most dominant forces in the world. We, as India, have a great advantage in our resources, and this is because of our demographic profile. In the next 10 – 15 years, we are going to build youngest country in the world. Over six hundred million Indians, like you all, are going to be of around 25 years of age; whereas the developed world is aging. They are aging; their budget is reduced, and they are going to, therefore, look at people like us in India to get the best skilled people from here. We had a chance to study at AIMA, a few years ago and we found out by 2025, the world will need at least 40 million additional skilled manpower from countries like India. But it doesn’t mean that we are going to send our people out there; it will be done by outsourcing. It will be like getting the customers to India and servicing their needs. That, my friends, is the opportunity, which is going to come your way. I just like to mention, as a result of this great movement, which is launched against corruption, you would believe that the role of the media and role of NGOs is increased. What does it mean to you who will be the working people? That you are going to be under the continuous gaze of media and the NGOs and you will have to be careful about how you work & how you live. Friends, I try to sketch for you the kind of world that you are going to be living in and working in. As I said, it is going to be very interesting and exciting world where you have to stretch yourself and there will be no bar for going higher and higher.
