Dec. 1, 2011 - PRLog -- Author Erna Mueller brings to her reading audience clever new words, assimilated into our society by text messaging, and youthful slang, in her fanciful book A New Leash on Life.

“Rarely have I read an entire book where virtually each sentence is written with such a combination of slang, comical innuendos, cool expressions, surrogate elucidations, and mental piquancy.  What might seem to be on the verge of discombobulating to many readers, I assume it would be perfectly understandable to someone with ADHD,” quoted Barbara Miller of Pacific Book Review.  The writing style is by far the most refreshing character in her story, but so is her character Justin Andrews, a 14 year old with the world under his thumb.  As Justin gets deeper into the grip of a criminal enterprise, he is serendipitously helped by a Seattle Police Department Lieutenant, Spencer Watley after Spencer is killed.  How is this possible?  Spencer returns to earth as a dog, hence the title A New Leash on Life.

Most books become movies, however in the case of A New Leash on Life, author Erna Mueller said during a recent interview, “This novel is based on an original screenplay I wrote, it won numerous awards but I was having difficulty finding a production company.  You know Hollywood, they won’t film it unless it’s familiar or from a well known book,” she continued. “A William Morris agent suggested I adapt the screenplay into novel form.  I didn’t think I’d take to novel writing so well.  The generous amount of words you can use is liberating. You can develop your characters and go on and on for pages.  What freedom! Screenwriting seems restrictive to me now,” she concluded.

When asked about the use of her verbiage, as being geared to the young adult, Erna Mueller said, “It is young adult although at the same time it’s not adult repellent.”  Even the expression, “adult repellent” is a cool way of talking!  “I love using phrases and the jargon of the younger generation,” Erna Mueller said.  “They have their own language.  Can you speak tween?” she asks.

She is currently working on her second book of what would then become a series, giving Justin Spencer and his cohorts a bit more of mystery, adventure, and a little romance; or should we call it “Puppy love?”
