Leave the Christmas Shopping to others

Although the high streets are full of shoppers, there are much quieter places to go. Take a relaxing break away from it all and visit places of interest such as museums etc. This article has some great suggestions, all you need to do is book!

Nov. 28, 2011 - PRLog -- Tis the season of peace and goodwill among all men – yet you’ll be hard pushed to find it on your local high street. The faces of stressed shoppers, manic mums and weary dads weave their way in and out of the throngs of people clamouring to stock up on Christmas goodies.

It’s an ideal time to escape all the madness and do your shopping online, and instead take a relaxing break away from it all doing the things no-one else has time to do.  A hotel near Cambridge is a perfect choice for a mini-break, offering a great combination of heritage, culture and, if you really must, shopping.

Let the Suffolk countryside ease you into a state of festive harmony – choose somewhere with real fires and a great menu and you won’t have to wander too far to find what you need to relax.  There are plenty of hotels near Cambridge offering a wide range of accommodation, from the traditional to the contemporary.

Quaint little market towns are wonderful at Christmas – and much less likely to be a stressful shop, as most people tend to head into the larger towns and high street names.

The area around Cambridge known as Huntingdonshire (featuring the four main towns of Huntingdon, Ramsey, St. Ives and St. Neots) has a wealth of history on offer.  Huntingdon proudly proclaims itself to be the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell and  the area also has a wealth of stunning villages nestled in the peaceful countryside.

Christmas and New Year are also excellent times for sightseeing local attractions. Queues are virtually unheard of in museums in December, as everyone else has far too much on the agenda.

Duxford Air Museum is a good example. Part of the Imperial War Museum family, the museum houses some of the most iconic aircraft in the world and is open during the winter opening hours 10am til 4pm (last admission is at 3pm). Museum shops often have unusual gifts too, particularly as stocking fillers for children.

The National Horse-Racing Museum in Newmarket is another fine example for expanding your cultural horizons.  Open until Friday 23rd December 10am to 5pm (last admission at 4.30pm) the museum is steeped in history, situated in the town’s subscription rooms, where betting men would gather after a race. The museum boasts a tea room and gift shop, aswell as an artist in residence.  Equine tours are available from Spring 2012 onwards.

Don’t pack too much into your schedule, make sure you leave enough time for a restorative walk in the fresh air.  A good old yomp across the fields to a pub serving real ale and traditional Sunday lunch is just what the doctor ordered and will definitely put the colour back in your cheeks.

Whatever you decide to do with your time away, one thing is certain.  You will return refreshed and ready to face the challenges of the festive season full on, without a single Bah Humbug in sight!
