Oct. 30, 2011 - PRLog -- Thanks to the technology of brain scans, scientists are learning more and more about addiction and it’s effects on the brain. Unfortunately, there are still many myths and misunderstandings that surround addiction. In spite of the fact that science is proving addiction to be a brain disease, there remains the notion that addicts are immoral.  This belief results in feelings of shame and embarrassment, not only for the addict, but for their families as well.

An estimated 22.2 million Americans struggle with addiction. This is America’s number one health crisis. Whether it’s a family member, friend, or co-worker, it is difficult to find anybody who isn’t somehow effected by the devastation of addiction. Here are some of the facts:

- New statistics show that over 1,800 college students die every year from alcohol related injuries.

- Prescription drug abuse is the most rapidly increasing drug abuse among teens.

- Each day more than 13,000 children and teens take their first drink.

- Teen girls are more likely than boys to use over-the-counter drugs to get high.

- Seventy-one percent of illegal drug-users are employed.

- Half of college students binge drink and/or abuse other drugs, and almost a quarter meet medical criteria for alcohol or drug dependence.

- One in four Americans will have an alcohol or drug problem at some point in their lives.

It is time to shatter the myths that revolve around addiction and learn the facts. For an expanded article that shares many more addiction facts and statistics visit: http://www.soaringabovecoaddiction.com/blog.asp
