Oct. 27, 2011 - PRLog -- It is natural to think of a paradisiac atmosphere when thinking about the country of Costa Rica. There’s a lot to be learned about the beautiful environment the country affords its visitors, and the paramount learning experiences available to students. Projects involving science and the practice of service learning are readily available in this central Spanish nation. The philosophy of learning is cultivated by both rich, hands-on experiences and enhanced student independence. The facilitation of effective learning experiences is certainly founded in an intercultural context when students take part in science and service learning projects in Costa Rica.

Service Learning

Service Learning can be regarded as a learning practice that encourages student participation in hands-on responsibilities that benefit the giver and the receiver. These responsibilities manifest themselves into activities that serve a meaningful purpose for communities, the world and the individual. Service learning responsibilities are available to address real-life needs and provide a common connection between hands-on activities and classroom learning. Students who become civically engaged are not only developing as an individual, but are becoming a part of one of the most accepted gestures to integrate service with learning.  One of the greatest gifts that can occur during a service learning program is a greater sense of purpose with the giver.

Costa Rica: Science and Service Learning

There may be no other extended learning program like an international science service program. Influenced by their community involvement, students who partake in a service and science learning program in Costa Rica are sure to delve into life-affirming experiences that pair volunteer work with ethical service work. An example of this type of experience is when students are involved with volunteering at a wildlife rescue center near La Fortuna.  Students aid a veterinarian with providing medical assistance and relief to displaced rainforest animals.  Students can see first hand the negative affects of human development.  When they volunteer here at the wildlife center they start to understand how they can help with preservation projects that help restore and preserve this fragile ecological habitat. A science and service learning trip abroad to Costa Rica will allow students to become an active participant in dynamic community efforts, long-term development activities and genuine student scholarship.
