SeniorHomes.com Wants to Hear Your Caregiving Stories!

Recognizing Caregivers in Honor of National Family Caregivers Month

Oct. 24, 2011 - PRLog -- SeniorHomes.com (http://www.seniorhomes.com/), the most comprehensive resource for seniors and their families searching for senior care or housing, today announces the launch of its first-annual SeniorHomes.com Caregiver Recognition Awards (http://www.seniorhomes.com/p/caregiver-recognition-awards/), co-sponsored by Emeritus Senior Living (http://www.emeritus.com/). The Caregiver Recognition Awards program aims to recognize the millions of Americans serving in a caregiving capacity to a friend or loved one, as well as those who do so in a professional capacity.

According to the National Alliance for Caregiving, nearly 30% of Americans are serving in a caregiving capacity to a friend or loved one. That's more than 65 million people, and together they contribute about $375 billion in unpaid services. And it's no easy job: The National Family Caregivers Association has amassed dozens of startling statistics demonstrating that caregiving takes a physical, emotional and financial toll on our nation's caregivers.

"We work with families seeking senior living and senior care options for a loved one, and we hear incredibly heartwarming stories every day," says Chris Rodde, CEO of SeniorHomes.com. "With the Caregiver Recognition Awards, we're honoring caregivers everywhere by offering a platform for caregivers and recipients to share their most memorable moments with the world. Just reading some of these stories is a learning experience, and we're excited about sharing this project with the community."

SeniorHomes.com will begin accepting caregiver stories through the company website today. Entrants submitting a caregiving story who also "like" the SeniorHomes.com Facebook page will be entered to win a random weekly gift card drawing. Some prizes have been donated by participating organizations, including It's Never 2 Late, a company which creates computer systems to engage residents and for use in therapy departments.

The community is invited to share their stories, browse submissions and vote on their favorites. A grand-prize winner will be selected in each category, based on expert feedback on the top three vote-getters in each category. The judging panel will be comprised of a group of leading senior care experts, including Patty Sheehan, Editor-in-Chief of Long-Term Living magazine, and Barbara McVicker, author and eldercare advocate.

A grand-prize winner will be selected in both the professional caregiver and family caregiver categories. The family caregiver category winner will also receive a complimentary respite stay for their loved one courtesy of program co-sponsor Emeritus Senior Living.

In addition to giving caregivers an opportunity to win incredible prizes, SeniorHomes.com aims to raise awareness of the challenges of caregiving and create a collection of heartfelt stories that will serve as inspiration for those caring for aging loved ones.
